Application & selection
Move progressively finer
Use light, even strokes with good support. Start at the coarsest grit actually needed, then move through 320, 400 and 800 only where the finish requires it.
SF Sports recommendation
Separate geometry, smoothing and polishing
Do not use sanding paper to correct a wrong edge angle. Geometry belongs to the file/guide stage; sanding only refines the surface afterwards.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is grit 320 used for?
Medium intermediate sanding step.
Should sanding change the edge angle?
No. It should refine the surface, not create geometry.
How much pressure should I use?
Light, even pressure.
Why use several grits?
Each finer grit removes the scratch pattern of the previous stage more gently.
What sequence makes sense?
180 for the first refinement, 320 and 400 as intermediate stages, 800 for very fine finishing.
Does sanding replace diamond polishing?
No. Depending on the service target, diamond or finishing stones can still follow.
When should I stop sanding?
When the previous scratch pattern is removed and the target surface is reached.
