HEAD Freeflex ST 14 X ski binding

The HEAD Freeflex ST 14 X ski binding combines Stream technology with race-focused characteristics and spindle adjustment. Its 7–14 range clearly distinguishes it from the ST 14 without X. Its Freeflex system reduces the binding’s influence on ski flex, an important part of a matched performance setup.

HEAD Freeflex ST 14 X ski binding: technology and feel

Freeflex: room for ski flex

The heel can move back as the ski bends, reducing the binding’s influence on the natural flex of the ski.

14 X or ST 14?

The X version offers spindle adjustment and a 7–14 range; the ST 14 starts at 4. The lower limit matters when selecting the model.

Consider the whole setup

Ski, plate, binding and boot must work together. Before purchase, we check the existing plate and the boot sole length.

Control starts with the right setup

The ST 14 X combines Stream technology with a RACE PRO heel with spindle adjustment. This race-oriented X version differs from the ST 14 in both heel construction and adjustment range. For junior racers, it is a specific equipment choice: race response, boot and required setting must match.

What matters on snow

  • Building the turn: The ski needs to bend under load. Freeflex reduces the restriction imposed by the binding, allowing the ski to work through the turn.
  • Power transmission: A compatible boot, binding and plate help deliver precise inputs to the edge. Matching the components matters more than the highest DIN number.
  • Stability on hard snow: Gate training and committed carving call for clear feedback. Edge preparation, ski flex and a well-fitting boot all play a substantial part in that feel.

Our buying advice: race binding or recreational model?

Our recommendation: committed racers and juniors with a setup suited to 7–14. Its lower limit is higher than the ST 14’s 4–14. A junior race boot must have a suitable Alpine Type A sole; the word junior is not enough. If a lower setting is required, we look at a more suitable alternative.

For regular race training, choose a binding whose construction suits your race plate and the response you want. For relaxed piste skiing, a compatible recreational binding may be the more sensible choice. A race binding earns its place as part of a matched system; a higher price or adjustment range does not automatically produce more edge grip.

How to assess construction and weight

For a race setup, we prioritise the right heel response, ski-flex function and plate compatibility over the lowest possible weight. Compare weights only for matching versions, and check whether a figure refers to one binding or a pair. Lower weight does not automatically mean greater precision, and higher weight does not automatically mean greater stability.

Check before buying

  • Ski and plate: exact model and intended binding interface.
  • Boot: sole standard, sole length and condition of the contact surfaces.
  • Skier and use: required adjustment range, training or competition, and discipline.

Use & selection

For advice, bring the exact ski model, plate details and your ski boots. We match these to your intended use. The model number is not your personal release setting and does not replace determining that setting or testing the system.

Mounting and function check

Have a specialist workshop mount the binding, match it to the sole length, set it and test it with your boot. A change of boots requires a fresh check of the combination. Keep contact surfaces clean and have unusual play or damaged parts inspected. For binding advice, bring your skis and both boots, and discuss the required work with us in advance.

Seven questions about the HEAD Freeflex ST 14 X

Who is the HEAD Freeflex ST 14 X designed for?

For ambitious racers and suitable junior setups in the 7–14 adjustment range.

What does Freeflex do?

The heel can move back as the ski bends, reducing the binding’s influence on the natural flex of the ski.

Which boots are compatible?

This model is intended for Alpine soles complying with ISO 5355 Type A, not GripWalk or Type C children’s soles. Check the marking on the actual boot and have the combination checked by a workshop.

What distinguishes this model?

The X version offers spindle adjustment and a 7–14 range; the ST 14 starts at 4. The lower limit matters when selecting the model.

Does the 85 mm brake fit my ski?

The version offered has an 85 mm brake. We check compatibility with your ski and mounting plate using the exact setup. Brake width alone does not confirm full compatibility.

Can I use the model number as my release setting?

No. The 7–14 range describes the binding’s adjustment options. A specialist workshop must determine your personal setting and check the function with your boots.

Can SF Sports help with selection and mounting?

Yes. In Gilching, we advise on the right combination and arrange mounting, adjustment and further race service work with you. Contact us first so we can take your existing equipment into account.
